Justin Bieber reportedly receives $10million for playing billionaire’s pre-wedding party

Justin Bieber has reportedly been paid $10million (£7.8million) to play a pre-wedding party for the son of the richest man in Asia.

The Indian businessman Mukesh Ambani, chairman of the company Reliance Industries, has an estimated net worth of over $120billion, and chose to spend some of it on an extravagant celebration ahead of his son Anant’s wedding to Radhika Merchant.

The show went down at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, India, and included Bieber running through a number of his biggest songs, including ‘Baby’, ‘Sorry’ and ‘What Do You Mean?’

It follows on from a similarly exclusive show that Rihanna played for the couple in March, her first full-length set in over six years.

Bieber has been withdrawing from the spotlight in recent years, opening up in 2019 about his ongoing struggles with anxiety. In 2022, he also took a formal break from performing live, cancelling all of the remaining live shows on his ‘Justice’ tour after being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome and suffering partial facial paralysis.

He reportedly turned down the offer to join Usher during his Super Bowl performance this year, as he “wasn’t feeling it”. A source claimed to Page Six that “there’s no bad blood between Usher and Justin,” adding, “Justin just wasn’t up for it.”

In the end, Usher was joined by guests including Alicia KeysH.E.R and will.i.am.

He did, however, make a surprise appearance onstage with Wizkid and Tems during their performance of ‘Essence’ at Coachella 2024.

It marked Bieber’s return to the Coachella stage, having performed as a guest during Ariana Grande‘s 2019 set and with Daniel Caesar for their hit ‘Peaches’ in 2022.

He also played a private show in February at a private NHL All-Star party, ahead of the All-Star Game, for which he served as a team captain, alongside Michael BubléTate McRae and Will Arnett.

In April, Bieber led the tributes to his close friend and rapper Chris King, who was reportedly shot dead aged 32.

Both metal legends were filmed sidestage at Norway’s Tons Of Rock Festival, where Metallica headlined on June 26, and Judas Priest on June 28. Nova Twins, Tool and Parkway Drive were among the other performers at the festival.

Both have been vocal proponents of newer artists in metal, throwing support behind the likes of Ghost and Sleep Token. They’re also no stranger to sharing a viral moment, given similar footage of Hetfield watching Judas Priest at Power Trip festival took social media by storm last year.

Discussing playing festivals with NME fresh after appearing on Glastonbury’s John Peel Stage in 2022, Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates said: “I think maybe there’s a subconscious way of just adapting to wherever you’re at, be it a room with 50 people or a big festival: you’re always going to do exactly what you do and be exactly who you are. I don’t know if that’s a particular thing [we do], but it’s maybe more of a subconscious search for the ways to connect the most.”

Touching on the meteoric rise of the Baltimore band, he continued: “The ability to reach whoever might be looking for our music, and seeing that happen, is always an amazing feeling.

“Since we’ve been able to play live again, the opportunities we’ve been blessed with to play for so many new people… I think playing music, no matter who you ask, it’s always an exciting opportunity, especially to never feel like you’re doing the same thing [and that] you’re always constantly growing. That doesn’t necessarily mean the size [of a crowd], but more so growing as far as challenging yourself, putting yourself in new scenarios and taking your opportunities to grow moving forward.”

Turnstile are among a slew of artists currently touring and holding concerts in Asia in 2024.

My Morning Jacket Welcome Karina Rykman for “Louie Louie” Debut and More in Chicago

On Independence Day, Deep Cut Presents kicked off the inaugural presentation of Rose On The River, an unforgettable new long weekend of live music on the bank of the Chicago River. Stacking the stage at the Salt Shed in Chicago, the first day of the inaugural festival brought performances from some favorite acts in the jam scene’s orbit, including Hans Williams, Andy Frasco & the U.N. and Neal Francis. After a day gathered around the stage, Windy City fans were treated to a headline performance from My Morning Jacket, who celebrated the holiday in style with a thrilling set dotted with debuts and featuring an extended sit-in from Karina Rykman.

After opening with the ripping Evil Urges earworm “I’m Amazed,” My Morning Jacket kept the hits flowing as it dug up standouts from its 25+ year canon like “Lay Low,” “Spring (Among the Living)” and “Dancefloors.” At the midpoint in the high-energy set, the band showed its colors with a thematically appropriate debut cover of Carl Broemel’s 2016 offering “4th of July,” adding full-band flair to the wistful and contemplative original from MMJ’s guitar and pedal steel pro.

The group wound through the latter half of its set with further anthemic originals, staging “Circuital” and “Off the Record” as they built to an explosive last rally. After setting the stage with the classic “Wordless Chorus” from 2005’s Z, the band merged into “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 2,” featuring additional support from ace bassist Rykman. Rykman’s sit-in with the band earlier this week for Radiohead’s “The National Anthem” closed out  the band’s Detroit show to widespread acclaim, prompting an extended collaboration for the follow-up. Together, MMJ and Rykman moved on to a live debut of the Afro-Cuban-inflected garage rock standard “Louie Louie,” in the style of the Kingsmen’s 1963 runaway hit. After this historic moment, the dream team closed out the first day of the festival with “One Big Holiday.”

Rose On The River returns tonight with performances from Carrtoons, DOMi and JD Beck, Badbadnotgood and Thundercat and will continue tomorrow, July 7, until a final headline set from Vulfpeck.
