Nohland Pours His Heart Out On ‘Vienna’

Nohland is back with the strikingly emotional ‘Vienna,’ his first single of 2024. Nohland – Vienna

Returning to the scene with his follow-up to 2023’s EP ‘Some Happy Place’, Nohland has resurfaced with his unfeigned brand of indie folk pop.

A gentle ambience sets ‘Vienna’ off as its chilled-out drumming and Paul Simon esq guitar line take the reigns. It’s not long before Nohland cuts in with his lyrics, carefully delivered, to explore his longing for an emotional connection with ‘the one that got away’.

The musicianship on this track is incredible, with its gentle tones and retrospective ambiences. Clocking in at precisely three minutes, Nohland embodies that ‘pop perfection’ attitude – taking the listener on an emotional journey complete with hook, melody and chorus. The record has been carefully crafted to be as emotionally intense as it can be.

‘Vienna’s chorus rings out, “And all that matters in the end is that I find you again”, showcasing Nohland’s masterful ability to craft stories, images and lyrics that not only sound good but also carry a heartfelt meaning.

Drawing inspiration from bands such as Snow Patrol, The Fray and the golden era of Coldplay, Nohland aims to draw that nostalgic, sentimental feeling that comes with life’s ups and downs. He started his musical journey in 2017, during a French party when he started to play with the idea of devoting his life to music before eventually getting together the time, money and effort to move to London and aim high.

‘Vienna’ is an emotional ballad, heart-wrenchingly poignant, as Nohland proves himself as one of indie’s finest new wordsmiths. Discover more from Nohland:

Above & Beyond’s Tony McGuinness Is Releasing a Rock Album Recorded 30 Years Ago

Tony McGuinness’ upcoming album was finished and stowed away years before most of you were born.

The influential producer and Above & Beyond member was not always an international headliner. Before he struck gold in the trance realm with bandmates Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki, McGuinness was a rock-and-roll artist inspired by legendary acts like Steely Dan and The Beach Boys.

He ultimately created his first solo rock album, Salt. Despite working on nine tracks for six months, after he finished recording the album, he’d lock it away in his archives for close to 30 years. Now, after two decades of success with Above & Beyond and their label Anjunabeats, McGuinness is finally ready to show the world Salt.

The album’s lead single, “Biker Babe,” was inspired by a short-lived romance with an American girl in the 90s, according to McGuinness. He said the story he wrote saw him placing himself and his muse into the world of David Lynch’s television show Twin Peaks. The combination of his bittersweet, romantic lyricism and sun-dappled guitar riffs will remind you of those summertime drives where your parents picked what was on the radio, long before the days of Spotify.

“Which is where the mention of The Roadhouse comes from and ran with that all the way through to the ending,” he explained in a press release. “I knew she was gonna have to go back to America because she had no visa, and she had a flat in America that she didn’t want to lose.”

McGuinness also shared another new single, “Babydoll White,” which may sound familiar to fans of Fingerprint, his deep house side project. He remixed his unreleased rock single for Anjunadeep back in 2020 and now, with help from Bob Bradley, fans can experience the sounds of the 90s in its original format.

Fans can pre-save Salt here.

Seven Lions ft. Lights – “Falling Away (Festival Mix)”

For someone such as myself who has had love for both Seven Lions and Lights separately, it is not surprising to find that together they sound like a match made in heaven.  The fall 2015 single “Falling Away,” dropped by Seven Lions only proved this to be true. The original mix was more progressive than that typical of Seven Lions, creating a piece that was much more focused on a smooth melody than bass drops. The difference of the piece was enjoyable, yet still the later release of the festival mix managed to outshine the original upon release.

The drop has oh-so-effortlessly made its return in the festival mix along with synths to change the track entirely and make the original feel as if it were missing this all along. Still holding the beautiful melody, “Falling Away (Festival Mix)” moves you in a way we all know from the Santa Barbara genre-hopper. In its entirety, Seven Lions gave new life to an already young and beautiful song, and made something more for fans to remember.

Last night, the veteran American rock band took to social media to officially confirm the postponement of their ‘Royal Flush’ tour “due to medical reasons”. The band did not share more information, but encouraged fans to “hold on to their tickets as they will be honoured for the rescheduled dates”.

In a separate post, Ann Wilson addressed the situation, explaining that the “time-sensitive” medical procedure she had undergone in late May was to remove something that “as it turns out, was cancerous”.

She added: “The operation was successful & I’m feeling great but my doctors are now advising me to undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy & I’ve decided to do it. And so my doctors are instructing me to take the rest of the year away from the stage in order to fully recover.”

Wilson also wrote that she “absolutely” plans “to be back on stage in 2025”, and signed off by saying that her letter would be “the last public statement I’d like to make on the matter”. Read the full post below.

In late May, Wilson and Heart announced that their European shows would be cancelled as the singer had to undergo “time-sensitive” medical procedures. At the time, the nature of the procedure was unknown, but they shared that Wilson’s expected recovery time would be six weeks. Heart wrapped up their first leg of their North American tour with Cheap Trick in late April and May.

In April, the band teamed up with Jimmy Fallon to perform the ’80s hit ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ to mark April 8th’s solar eclipse. Most of North America and Mexico witnessed the spectacle for the first time since 2017. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon lines up perfectly between the Earth and the sun, blocking out the sunlight. North America won’t see the celestial event again for 21 years.

Rapper B.G.’s Future Songs Must Be Approved by the U.S. Government, Judge Rules

When New Orleans rapper B.G. came home in September after serving an 11-year sentence following his guilty plea on two counts of possession of a firearm and one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice, the rap community rejoiced. He’s the man responsible for entering the phrase “bling-bling” into the pop culture lexicon, after all.

But nearly a year later, the founding member of ’90s rap group Hot Boys is facing an unusual legal challenge: On Friday (June 28), a U.S. District Court judge in Louisiana ruled that the New Orleans rapper must provide the U.S. Probation Office with a copy of the lyrics to his upcoming songs for approval before producing or promoting them.

Why Proposed Laws to Stop the Criminalization of Rap Lyrics Don’t Go Far Enough (Guest Column)

07/01/2024

The decision, handed down by U.S. district court judge Susie Morgan, came several months after B.G. (real name Christopher Dorsey) was arrested in March for performing at a Las Vegas concert alongside rapper Lil Boosie; apparently, B.G. needed prior permission from the court to associate with acts that also have felony convictions on their record, as Lil Boosie does. The probation officer in the case also cited B.G.’s work with Gucci Mane, another rapper/convicted felon with whom B.G. released a collaborative mixtape, Choppers & Bricks, in December.

B.G. was subsequently released on his own recognizance pending the judge’s decision. Shortly after, the rapper expressed his frustration in an Instagram post, saying in part, “It’s crazy how after paying my debt to society with 12 and a half years of my life I come home and still ain’t free…I been doing everything the right way and it seems like that ain’t enough.”

At a court hearing on June 18, B.G. and prosecutors confirmed they had reached a deal to modify the conditions of the rapper’s supervised release following his March arrest but “disagreed” over the prosecutors’ request to prohibit the rapper “from promoting and glorifying future gun violence/murder” in his music and at his concerts, according to the June 28 ruling.

“The Defendant argues that the additional condition proposed by the Government is an unconstitutional prior restraint of speech that is an overly broad condition of supervised release,” the ruling reads.

The judge ultimately found that the prosecutors’ request was “not sufficiently clear and specific to serve as a guide for the Defendant’s conduct and for those entrusted with his supervision,” instead imposing a special condition that B.G. provide the probation office “with a copy of the lyrics of any song he writes,” according to the ruling. All lyrics B.G. shares with the probation office will be passed to the U.S. government, which can then decide if his “conduct is inconsistent with the goals of rehabilitation,” the ruling continues.

A representative for B.G. did not immediately respond to Billboard‘s request for comment.

The ruling is certain to cause controversy at a time when the practice of lyrics being used against rappers in criminal court has become a hot-button issue. In November, a judge ruled that Young Thug‘s lyrics can be used during his YSL RICO case, saying that “the First Amendment is not on trial.” Bobby Shmurda and the late Drakeo the Ruler have also had their lyrics used against them in criminal cases. There have since have been laws passed and proposed on both the state and federal levels to stop the criminalization of rap lyrics; in September, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a statute restricting the practice, while similar laws have been proposed in New York and the U.S. House of Representatives.
