Nando’s Surprise Launches Australia’s First Ever Chicken Shop Sessions With Nina Las Vegas, Coterie & More

Last Saturday afternoon (July 20), amongst a rainy day and a crowd of footy fans, a buzzing group waited in anticipation at Melbourne’s Federation Square, eager to hop on a bus to Nando’s’ first-ever Chicken Shop Sessions event in Australia.

A short ride later, they were at Nando’s Fitzroy on Smith Street, but in place of tables and sauce bottles were spotlights, pale ales and an intimate party atmosphere soon to showcase some of Australia and New Zealand’s hottest emerging artists – and even hotter chicken. It felt very timely, given the event was hosted on what would have been the weekend of Splendour In The Grass (if this year’s festival wasn’t cancelled back in March); a rep for Nando’s confirmed they made sure to invite guests who had been ticketholders for Splendour.

“From Ed Sheeran to Post Malone and everyone in-between, Nando’s has a long history of supporting artists across the music industry,” said Tom Blackburn, Nando’s Head of Brand & Marketing for the ANZ market. “The Chicken Shop Sessions are all about giving emerging artists the opportunity to take centre stage in the wake of major festival cancellations and the mass closure of live music venues.”

Nando’s has a long history in helping people express themselves musically. 2018 saw the launch of a free-to-use music studio under the Nando’s branch in Frith Street, Soho. Three years later, Johannesburg’s Constitutional Hill was similarly morphed into creative recording hub Flame Studios. “Creativity and music have always been a huge part of the brand globally,” said Blackburn.

UNIFIED Music Group were collaborators in the organisation of last weekend’s event. “It was a bit of a combined effort on this one, and we came together to program an event that made sense for the brand and the intention of the night,” said Michelle Rose, UNIFIED’s Head of Staff. “It also helped that a lot of the artists already work with Nando’s.”

“We were really excited when we heard that the client was Nando’s because we know that they really love the industry. Artists have lived off the back of the generosity of Nando’s for a long time.”

The first Chicken Shop Sessions was an intimate snapshot of the emerging music scene in Australia and New Zealand, capturing a diverse array of artists and an equally varied selection of genres, ranging from singer-songwriter to pop R&B, all the way to reggae-tinged rock over the course of the event.

Blending it all seamlessly was local DJ Nina Las Vegas, who kept the vibe flowing with house edits and Charli xcx cuts as platters of PERi-PERi tenders, chips and Portuguese tarts made their way around the room.

“It was really fun – I think it worked really well because we had all these different acts,” she said at night’s end. “People don’t realise how ingrained Nando’s already are with music. Everyone in the music community knows that if you do a video shoot or have a band thing – because there’s not a lot of money in music right now for emerging acts, we can go to Nando’s with what we’re doing and they’ll send a [meal] voucher.”

“Working with [Nando’s] was great,” said Melbourne singer-songwriter ISHAN, who opened the night. “It was almost like I didn’t work with them, they just kind of gave me a stage, and they brought the people and said, ‘Do your thing’. In that sense, they were brilliant.”

And so was ISHAN – genuine and humble, the 20-year-old singer played an all-acoustic set that showed off his knack for instantly connecting melodies and authentic songwriting. Opting to play without his typical loop pedal, the crowd were more than happy to be his percussion at request for the songs that called for it.

“That’s kind of how I started,” he said. “Whenever I write a song, it’s all just strung on the acoustic guitar like I’ve played today. That would have been what it was like.”

ISHAN’s time spent busking – three-to-four times a week on Melbourne’s Bourke Street – has been paying off big this year, supercharged by a clip of My Mouth (la la la) going viral on TikTok; it’s boosted his socials to over 18 million views and counting.

Multi-genre rapper/producer CHAII came next, bringing danceable energy with slick beats and cruisy R&B synths. The Persian-NZ performer boasted a friendly and fun set, intertwined with some surprising Nando’s lore about her family’s business: “We used to make the chickens on the table numbers. That’s my Nando’s backstory.”

CHAII is on the upswing; her music has found its way to advertisements, game soundtracks and television, in no small part thanks to her wide-reaching creative vision. Her variety showed onstage; a set highlight was Eshah, sung in Parsi and paired with dynamic electronic production.

Coterie headlined the night with smooth reggae vibes. Cheeky with the occasional friendly go at the crowd, the four brothers partied on the Nando’s stage with an on-the-fly setlist, closing out on laidback hit Cool it down. The group are in the midst of a huge year, having recently been announced as openers for Tones And I’s upcoming Australian tour this August.

Adding further to the night was a collaborative real-time art installation courtesy of multi-disciplinary queer artist La Vanesso.

Nando’s Chicken Shop Sessions are set to offer exciting opportunities for emerging musicians and fans alike across Australia and New Zealand, with more events set to be announced in the near future. So begs the question: Where would you want to see the next Chicken Shop Session? And who would you love to see perform at it?

Artists React To Joe Biden Dropping Out Of US Presidential Race: ‘We Are Truly Living In Unprecedented Times’

In the early hours of the morning today (July 22), current US President Joe Biden announced he would be stepping down from the 2024 Presidential election, severing his bid for reelection this November. Expectedly so, the internet has erupted with an onslaught of scorching hot takes about the news – and of course, some of the world’s biggest musical artists have weighed in.

In a formal statement posted just after 3:45am AEST, Biden wrote: “It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as [the US] President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as the President for the remainder of my term.”

Just 30 minutes afterwards, Cher spoke up with some conflicted feelings about the upcoming election – though she seemed to have misread Biden’s statement, as she opined on Twitter that she “[doesn’t] believe the Democrats can win the Presidency” with Biden as the party’s frontrunner. “I believe it’s time [to] pass the baton,” she said, imploring the Democratic party to “think way outside the box”.

In a follow-up tweet, Cher gave the opinion that a new Democratic frontrunner would be “the only chance for [the US] to remain [a] democracy”. She notably campaigned for Biden in 2020, even going so far as releasing a song called Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe.

Another musical icon from the same era, Barbra Streisand, praised Biden as “a man who accomplished significant achievements in his [four-year] term”, saying to her audience that people “should be grateful for his upholding of our democracy”.

In terms of younger artists speaking out, Lizzo noted in an Instagram post that “we are truly living in unprecedented times”, while Finneas said he has “an enormous amount of respect” for Biden as “a person putting the people before themselves and their pride”.

Meanwhile, Cardi B tweeted in support of Kamala Harris – the current US Vice President and Biden’s (now former) running mate in his bid for reelection – taking over as the Democratic frontrunner; Harris herself confirmed that she fully intends “to earn and win this nomination”.

Ariana Grande also vouched her support for Harris by sharing a post of endorsement (originating from Biden himself) to her Instagram Story, while Charli xcx quipped on Twitter that “Kamala IS brat” (referencing the artist’s just-released album Brat). Shortly thereafter, Harris followed Charli on Instagram.

Surprisingly, noted Trump fanatic Jason Aldean hasn’t piped up about the news just yet. We have no doubts he’ll have a lot to say when he inevitably does.

Responsibly Playing Slots

Silent Disco Events Seattle - Seattle's Premier Silent Disco Headset Rental Company

A slot is a narrow opening, typically round in shape, that allows for the passage of a shaft or rod. A slot can also refer to a time period that is scheduled for an activity. For example, a visitor may reserve a time slot for a tour of a museum. A slot can also be found in a computer program, where it refers to a space used for storing data.

A football cornerback is often tasked with covering the slot receiver on offense. This position is difficult because the slot receiver can catch passes all over the field. Fortunately, there are several strategies that can help football cornerbacks cover the slot receiver effectively.

The first step to playing slot games responsibly is establishing a budget and sticking to it. Players should only use disposable income when gambling, and should never use rent or grocery money for this purpose. It is also important to understand the rules of each slot game. This will help players avoid making mistakes that could lead to financial or emotional problems.

Whether playing online or at a land-based casino, it is important to know when to quit. Many slot machines are addictive, and it is easy to lose control when playing them. When a player begins losing money, they should stop playing immediately and focus on other activities. It is also helpful to set limits before starting a gaming session, such as a maximum loss amount. This will help players stay within their budget and prevent them from becoming addicted to the game.

Payouts in slots are determined randomly by the random number generator (RNG). If a winning combination is struck, the machine will display a message and award the payout indicated on the pay table. Despite popular belief, the odds of hitting a particular symbol do not change from spin to spin. In addition, a slot’s volatility is not indicative of how often or how big a payout will be.

Some people believe that if the reels wiggle, it means that a jackpot is about to hit soon. This is not true, however, as each spin has an independent chance of landing a win. The fact that the reels wiggle is simply a way to make the game more exciting.

Another common misconception is that slot players are rewarded for spinning the reels in certain patterns. This is not the case, and a winning symbol can appear on any of the reels. However, some slot games do offer bonus rounds in which a player can earn extra spins or additional chances to win by spinning the reels in specific patterns.

Lastly, it is important to remember that there is no such thing as a “due” payout on a slot machine. Winning combinations are determined by the RNG, which randomly selects symbols from the reels to create a payline. A player must hit a specific payline to receive a payout. It is important to read the paytable before playing a slot machine, as it will help players understand how to maximize their winnings.

Radiohead Shares Brisbane Pub Choir Version Of ‘Creep’

There’s no show quite like a Pub Choir show. You walk in as a punter and walk out as a performer.

Pub Choir shows include packed-out rooms singing classics like Africa by Toto, Backstreet Boys’ I Want It That Way, the Bee Gees’ How Deep Is Your Love, Coldplay’s Yellow, The Winner Takes It All by ABBA and heaps more. But what happens when a band they’ve covered happens to see a video from a Pub Choir concert? Will they get it?

Over the weekend, Radiohead shared Pub Choir’s rendition of their Pablo Honey classic, Creep, performed at the Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane in 2022. Sharing the video on their Instagram Stories, the British rockers described the performance as “wholesomeness”.

Reacting to the band’s Instagram Story, Pub Choir wrote on social media: “Radiohead. As in, actual Radiohead.

“THE Radiohead saw Pub Choir’s cover of Creep and shared it online calling it ‘Friday Wholesomeness’. Anyway, Astrid [Jorgensen, founder and director of Pub Choir] will never recover from this excitement!!!!!! Were you there? Brisbane never misses ? Ahhhh!!!!”

In a follow-up post, Pub Choir mentioned their forthcoming tour dates and added, “Radiohead liked our rendition of Creep ? were you there? Another night of Brisbane magic!!!”

ASIP – Deep Breakfast Mix 267

The Deep Breakfast mix series has slowly (quite quickly compared to my isolatedmix efforts!) become one of the greatest ambient-leaning mix series around, pulling in some of the finest curators and artists to grace our small world. From well-known artists and DJs to passionate music collectors, it seems Francesco, the curator, is intent on hosting a series truly meant for every corner of the ambient spectrum.

The name of the mix series gives you an idea of what to expect, and for my submission, I battled hard with what style to attempt in order to live up to the many great mixes that have been featured before. Breakfast to me – deep or not – can often be light and uplifting – chill or even dubtechno on some mornings. But similarly, a deep breakfast may also mean the edges of light at 4 or 5am… and this is more the route I went with this mix. Look out for some of the many upcoming ASIP tracks featured in this one!

Big thanks to Francesco for the invite, and I hope you all enjoy the mix.

Basil Cook Departs ABC Music

Basil Cook has announced he’s resigning as the Senior Label Manager at ABC Music, ending a tenure that’s spanned nearly 15 years.

The announcement came in a post shared to Cook’s LinkedIn page this morning (July 22), describing his time at the public broadcaster as “an amazing ride” and noting that he’s felt “so fortunate to enjoy a long list of career highlights working for the label”.

Cook’s statement continued: “I have had the privilege to work with some truly amazing bands, artists, managers, and staff over the years, and I’m going to miss many things departing soon, but I feel right now that I need to take a risk and see what happens!

“To everyone along the road, thanks for your involvement in my working life – see you in the pit!”

Cook’s final day at ABC Music will be this coming Friday (July 26). His replacement has not yet been announced.

Cook started working for ABC Music in January 2010, first as a Digital Music & Strategy Manager, before being promoted to Senior Label Manager in September 2013.

According to his LinkedIn, Cook supervised the labels team across triple j, country, children’s and alternative releases, led “the management of new and existing artists regarding contract signing and negotiation”, assisted in coordinating release schedules and campaigns, and handled “content creation and management of digital exploitation in addition to the secondary digital exploitation of existing back catalogue product”.

Separate from his responsibilities at ABC Music, Cook has worked as the Board Treasurer for the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) since 2014, and as the self-employed director of the Sydney Ramen Festival since 2021. The latter event ran from June 17 to July 29 for its 2023 edition, but has not (yet) been confirmed to return for 2024.

Blind Pilot Celebrate Lifelong Friendship And Creative Rebirth On Soaring New Single “Jacaranda”

Blind Pilot have shared the opening track to their first album in nearly a decade, “Jacaranda,” which serves as a bold declaration of reclamation and renewal from bandleader Israel Nebeker. Penned on a formative trip to Mexico City, Nebeker leaned on Blind Pilot co-founder and longtime friend Ryan Dobrowski to help overcome a years-long struggle with writing new music. Behind the group’s free-flowing arrangements and full-hearted harmonies, “Jacaranda” serves a show of gratitude for their lifelong partnership and unwavering trust in one another. Nebeker remembers: “we were in a park hanging out under these giant jacaranda trees in full violet bloom, and it turned to a song of thanks to him for being so patient with me.’
