Jake Xerxes Fussell :: The Aquarium Drunkard Interview

The quality of Jake Xerxes Fussell’s output has stayed remarkably consistent over his first five albums, but his confidence in his abilities as an interpreter and the audacity of his song selection continue to grow. The nine songs on his newest, When I’m Called, gather out of the vastness of the past few centuries of sung songs to talk to one another, elaborate on one another, and thread each other through with intertwined meaning.

Cardi B responds to “obvious anticipation” for new album: “I promise you it’s coming this year”

Cardi B has responded to the “obvious anticipation” around her upcoming new album, telling fans that it will be “coming this year”.

Cards has been working on her second album for six years, and in May offered an update saying she was delaying the release of the record in a now-deleted tweet.

“Anyway, NO album this year,” she wrote. “I don’t care. I’m relaxing this year. [I’m] dropping these features I already committed to and travelling and enjoying my summer.”

This was later revealed to be untrue when a representative for the rapper said that an album was still on the cards for this year. It was also made known that the LP had no title and needed a few more songs added to it.

The currently untitled project will be the follow-up to Cardi’s 2018 record-breaking debut ‘Invasion Of Privacy’. The release won Best Rap Album at the 2019 Grammys, making Cardi the first-ever solo female act to win the award.

She spoke about the album’s delay in a cover story with Rolling Stone too, saying: “I take my music so fucking seriously that that’s why I don’t put it out. “If it’s not perfect to my ear, if every fucking word doesn’t sound like it’s pronounced right, if the beat is overpowering the words or the words is overpowering the beat, I don’t want to put it out.”

Now, on X/Twitter, Cardi has given an update on when fans can expect to hear the new project. She wrote: “I wanna say this to Bardi gang or anybody who’s just a fan of my music or even my craziness… I have my good days and my bad days but you know what, whether it’s good or bad I couldn’t be happier with the obvious anticipation for my album..Sometimes I get a little aggressive because yall know I don’t like to be told what to do but I promise you it’s coming THIS YEAR. Thank you for the love and anticipation and always holding me down. I love yall.”

In the years since releasing her debut album, Cardi has kept busy releasing a selection of singles, most notably ‘Please Me’ with Bruno Marsin 2019, ‘Up’ in 2021 and ‘WAP’ in 2020 with Megan Thee Stallion. She’s also released a new collaboration today (July 19) with Rob49 called ‘On Dat Money’ that you can listen to here:

Earlier this month, Cardi teased a new song that features a Janet Jackson sample.

On July 1, the ‘WAP’ rapper posted a video snippet of a new song to her Instagram Stories. Sampling Jackson’s ‘Funny How Time Flies (When You’re Having Fun)’, the snippet sees Cardi trade in her usual energetic rap verses for subdued singing: “I hope that you on your way / Crazy ’bout you / Waiting on you, can’t wait to sit on that face / Focused on you.”

She also wrote: ‘Y’all like this vibe for ‘CB2’?” ‘CB2’ is the working title for Cardi B’s long-awaited sophomore album.

Fans also think Cardi has been giving some clues about the themes of the album recently too.

Cardi B’s 2018 debut album ‘Invasion Of Privacy’ scored a four-star review from NME, with Nick Levine writing: “This is a remarkably confident and compelling debut from a superstar who’s put in the graft. “My little 15 minutes lasting long as hell, huh?” she boasts nonchalantly on final track ‘I Do’. On this evidence, it’s going to last a lot longer yet.”

I’MMORTAL SHARES GRIPPING MUSIC VIDEO FOR SINGLE ‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’

Up-and-coming avant-pop superstar I’MMORTAL has shared an enthralling music video to accompany her third single, ‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’, which dropped on 7 June via her own imprint, Immortality. The single received acclaim from tastemaker Metal Magazine. I’MMORTAL is a New York and London-based genre-fluid music producer, vocalist, visual artist, and creative director. I’MMORTAL launched into the digital sphere in August 2023 with the release of her debut tech-house single, ‘Versace Spaceship’. Her second single, a fun electropop anthem titled ‘Supervillain’ followed in October, receiving support from notable tastemakers CLASH Magazine and Earmilk. Despite being relatively new in the music scene, I’MMORTAL has seen a steady increase in streams, monthly listeners, and hundreds of organic playlist placements, with her first two singles garnering 50K streams across platforms.

The music video for ‘KILLED U IN A DREAM’ feels like a fever dream, as I’MMORTAL pristinely plays the role of a dark, goddess-like deity. The video was directed by PXKRW who are highly revered for their ability to create surreal, hyper-realistic dream worlds and alternate realities. The video is hauntingly beautiful and transports the viewer into another dimension filled with destruction, death and rebirth. The dark, eerie lighting, accompanied by occasional flashing lights creates a sense of disorientation, as I’MMORTAL puts a spell on the viewer with her bewitching movements and facial expressions.

I’MMORTAL shared: “This music video is a reflection of the concept metamorphosis. I had the wonderful chance to collaborate with the directing duo PXKRW over the span of a couple months. Since the song is about rebirth, PXKRW fleshed out the concept to encapsulate this supernatural being undergoing a very raw transformation. PXKRW wanted to create a performance-based video with stunning styling and makeup to compliment their signature VFX. The styling and makeup was very intentional to the metamorphosis theme, as we wanted there to be a stark difference between the initial white dress look and the final black dress look. My personal favorite was the second neo-baby bump look, which combined with PXKRW’s VFX genius ultimately became a representation of the chrysalis stage of metamorphosis. This was also the first time I did a movement-based project, and I spent a lot of time working with the movement director (Donna Kim) to put intention behind the movement. I pushed myself out of my comfort zone in a good way, and I feel inspired to learn more about movement for future projects!”

Tenacious D’s Kyle Gass Deletes Trump Apology Instagram Post

Kyle Gass of Tenacious D has deleted his Instagram apology following intense backlash over a controversial comment about former U.S. President Donald Trump during the band’s Sydney concert.

The incident, which occurred on July 14, has had major repercussions for both Gass and the band.

During the performance at Sydney’s ICC Sydney Theatre, Jack Black presented Gass with a birthday cake onstage.

When asked to make a wish, Gass quipped, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referencing a recent assassination attempt on the former president. The remark, which initially drew laughter from the audience, quickly sparked widespread criticism.

In response to the uproar, Gass initially apologized on Instagram, stating, “I don’t condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone. What happened was a tragedy, and I’m incredibly sorry for my severe lack of judgment. I profoundly apologize to those I’ve let down and truly regret any pain I’ve caused.” However, this apology has since been removed from his account.

The fallout from Gass’s joke led to a domino effect that saw Gass dropped by his agent, and the remainder of Tenacious D’s tour was canceled. Jack Black, Gass’s bandmate, issued a statement expressing regret and announcing the halt of all future Tenacious D activities. Black’s post, which remains on his Instagram, reads:

“I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. “

He continued, “After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”

Frontier Touring has canceled six shows in Australia and New Zealand, including stops in Newcastle, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Wellington, and Auckland. The status of Tenacious D’s five scheduled U.S. shows in October remains uncertain.

Even Australia’s former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has become embroiled in the drama, telling news.com.au this week, “It makes me feel sick someone would joke about violence. Physically ill. People might think it’s a bit of ‘funny haha’ at a concert to run off at the mouth off about this stuff.”

“It’s not,” he said. “It’s about threats to physical life; it’s about the near assassination of a former and prospective President of the United States, depending on the votes of the American people. It’s about the murder of innocent civilians and two people being seriously wounded.”

Rudd added, “These people need to grow up and find a decent job”.

United Australia Party Senator Ralph Babet also called on the Australian federal government to deport Tenacious D in the wake of Gass’s comment.

“I call on the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese to join me in denouncing Tenacious D, Jack Black, and band member Kyle Gass, and I call on the Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to revoke their visas and deport them immediately,” Babet said in a statement.

As of now, Gass’s most recent Instagram post features a video of a flight over Sydney Harbour with the cheeky caption: “Birthday helicopter ride around Sydney Harbour, hours before the storm.”
