A. Savage has announced a run of Australian tour dates, set to take place in November 2024. The Parquet Courts frontman will be performing solo in Australia for the first time, marking his return after his band’s visit in July 2022 for both Splendour In The Grass and select headlining shows. The full run of solo tour dates, as well as ticketing information, can be accessed below.

Prior to the full tour announcement today (July 23rd), Savage had been announced on the line-up for the regional Victorian festival Town Folk. Set to take place in Castlemaine in mid-November, Savage will join the likes of The Teskey Brothers, Marlon Williams and Grace Cummings on the bill.

A. Savage – ‘Elvis In The Army’

Savage first toured Australia over a decade ago, arriving in the country with Parquet Courts in January of 2014. There, he played with the band at that year’s Laneway Festival. Parquet would return for a one-off appearance six months later at that year’s Splendour In The Grass before returning for Golden Plains in February 2015 and again over the 2016/17 new-year period while performing at that year’s Falls Festival.

Later in 2017, Savage released his debut solo album Thawing Dawn. The band returned to Laneway Festival in 2019. Savage’s most recent release, The Loft Sessions EP, was released in April 2024.

After the indie pop jaunt of earlier single ‘Dance With You’ (premiered by Backseat Mafia here) , the irrepressible Charlie Lane returns with ‘I Hate Me’: a far more pared down and reflective single that explores self doubt and the attendant anxieties with a raw authenticity. The emotions are expressed by a pounding insistent percussive beat, spidery frail guitars that drape across the sonic landscape and Lane’s velvet vocals that are infused with a sense of aching, regret and longing.

The feelings expressed are immediately identifiable and, while personal, eminently universal:

Hey, I hate me
I make plans with my friends
And then I cancel on them
Because I hate me
This social anxiety is wrapped up around me like a vine
I’m not fine
So I take it out on you, and then blame me
Because hey
I hate me

Lane’s expression is uniquely antipodean in delivery – adding a tangible veracity and aching beauty to the expression. The accompanying video is close and intimate, an immersive performance that is as raw as the song:

‘I Hate Me’ is out now and available to download and stream here. Lane’s debut album ‘I’m OK Now, But I Wasn’t’ will be released in later this year.

“‘Hopscotch’ describes an on-and-off partner who toys with their significant other solely for their own entertainment,” the band expands. “The singer is desperate for stability and continuously chases after their partner despite the amount of heartbreak they have caused her. It’s a torturous cycle for her and a twisted game for her partner.”

Talel McBriar is a singer-songwriter currently based out of Victoria, B.C. The first time I saw her perform live was at a SoFar Sounds show in Vancouver, where she beautifully showcased her songs and blend of traditional folk with alternative rock references.

Talel is no stranger to performing, having toured extensively in B.C. and in Eastern Canada. This summer, she and her band have been keeping busy with a slew of Western Canadian tour dates, including these upcoming shows:

Q: Introduce yourself!

Talel McBriar: Hello! My name is Talel and I am a singer-songwriter and indie folk musician. I am originally from Nelson, B.C. but I am now based out of the Coast. I grew up playing classical piano and flute, but began playing guitar and songwriting when I attended a bluegrass music workshop in my early teens.

My single ‘Not a Machine’ was released this past March and I will be touring around B.C. to festivals and venues this summer with my band and solo. I’m so excited!

Q: How would you describe your music to a first-time listener?

TB: A lot of different music was always playing in my house growing up, from The Be Good Tanyas to The Tragically Hip to Norah Jones to Metallica. So I think my songs are little mixtures of all the influences and sounds that I have absorbed along the way.

But to sum it up, my sound definitely leans heavily into the alternative folk genre. My favourite thing about songwriting is crafting lyrics and forming new ways to explain my observations and experiences, so I would also say that my songs are very lyrically based.

Q: What is your favourite music venue in Vancouver?

TB: I really love Green Auto! It was one of the first venues I performed at when I moved to the Coast just over a year ago and it was such a good experience. I’ve met some of my bandmates there and seen some great shows at Green Auto. I also really love The Heatley and have attended and played some really fun and intimate shows there!

Q: If someone is listening to you for the first time, which song would you recommend they start with?

TB: I would say my new song ‘Not a Machine’! It was just released this past March and I feel like it encapsulates the sound I want my next album to have. I would also recommend checking out the music video of us recording ‘Not a Machine’ at Neighbourhood Studios in Langford, B.C.—it’s up on YouTube!

Q: What was the last live show you attended?

TB: I recently saw Ora Cogan at Oxygen Art Center when I was home in Nelson. It was such a beautiful and inspiring show; wonderful songwriting and an amazing band. I have been listening to ‘Cowgirl’ on repeat lately!
