Live Review: Charm of Finches and Mia Kelly, The Lexington, London – 20th June 2024

Initial concerns that this Green Note presents gig at the somewhat larger Lexington might be affected by the draw of football did not play out – there was a good sized audience by the time Charm of Finches took to the stage.  Australian sibling duo Ivy and Mabel Windred-Wornes are on their third tour of the UK, and the time spent together makes them long to be home: there’s plenty of good natured sisterly put downs throughout their performance, as well as praising the current performance space and references to their last time in London when they appeared just down the road aways at St. Pancras Old Church.

Although they play other stringed instruments, for this gig Mabel stuck to acoustic guitar whilst Ivy played keyboards – and there’s a striking visual contrast between the two with Mabel in a practical dress and boots whilst Ivy, who is also fond of the dreamy hand gesture as she sings, is elaborately begowned as if stopping off at the gig whilst on the way to a ball. Charm of Finches have recently released their fourth album ‘Marlinchen In The Snow‘, and that provided the majority of their slightly over an hour long set.

There are two strands drawn out from the song introductions – the danger of crossing paths with someone who writes songs with topics drawn from their lives, and the prevalence of death as a song topic. And it’s true that there is a certain gothic darkness underlying several songs which otherwise could sound sweet or wistful.

The percussive ‘Clean Cut‘ was an exemplary of the somewhat brutal relationship advice that Ivy likes to dispense – admittedly in reaction to somewhat poor treatment “I left that city on the morning flight and right then you decided I wasn’t in your life any longer“.  It’s a song that sounds, in tempo and vocal interplay, somewhat like Smoke Fairies but drawing its musical hearts from a folk basis rather than a blues influence – and there’s strength in the repeated chorus statements “I finally wake up, making my mind up, making a clean cut.”

In complete contrast ‘Atlantis‘ is a dreamy reflection on love with the sunken city a metaphor for a hidden or supressed love – with the cold of the depths analogous to the inner emotional chills.  It’s a melancholic delight.  Equally delicate was ‘Leave It All Behind‘ which dwells on thoughts of things left behind, and the balanced compensations of the travelling life of a musician – to be in snow in January when heat is what one is used to, and leaving brings thoughts that “it’s a bittersweet goodbye while I long for something more“.

Whilst songs like ‘Middle of your Mess‘ present a catchy folk-pop  – this one a swipe at someone who crossed Ivy’s path, and not in a good way, but the set highlights would also include the low key ‘Human‘ which makes the suggestion that it’s unreasonable to lay the responsibility of making you a better person on someone else’s shoulders – sure there’s work to be done but  “it’s not my job to teach you how to be a human man.”

The full gothic-folk attraction of Charm of Finches was to the fore on the new album’s title track – ‘Marlinchen In The Snow‘ which draws on a particularly grisly Grimm fairy tale – and takes the story of a mother who murders her stepson and covers the crime by feeding him to the boy’s father – and makes of it a murder ballad that’s a metaphor, at least in part, for the travel the duo have undertaken – the imagery of a frozen lake reflected, Mabel mentioned, on their recording the song in a Nova Scotia winter.  Even in a British summer it’s a gripping – and somewhat chilling – listen.

Charm of Finches make some great music, their vocal interplay is just perfect and their songs draw mostly on darker emotions – but with arrangements that also make them palatable enough listens.  When’s the next tour?

Support came from Mia Kelly from Quebec – a singer songwriter with a strong voice and a clutch of songs that are inspired from he own life.  The semi-apologetic for the dumping ‘Meaning Well‘ came from a period of heartache which had the upside that at least it produced a handful of songs – on this one Mia Kelly had help from her friend Blair Dunlop on “fixing the melody“.  ‘Vagabond‘ is the back story of someone Kelly met on a bus who asked her to go cliff jumping for the day, obviously a yes person Mia Kelly had a great day and also found out the tale of what had made him homeless.  With a great stage presence – she even managed to get a sing-a-long on a song sung in French – and songs worth hearing she’d surely be an ideal headliner in the “real” Green Note.

Kylie Minogue shares dance-y new single ‘My Oh My’ with Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo

Kylie Minogue has today shared a dance-y new single, ‘My Oh My’, with Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo – check it out below.

The new single comes after all three artists shared a clip on their social media accounts featuring a snippet of music from the track earlier this week.

The single nods to Minogue’s mega-hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ with a “la la la” refrain. Produced by Steve Mac who has worked with the likes of Calvin Harris, Little Mix, The Saturdays, Ed Sheeran, One Direction and P!nk), a statement says that “the song is destined to be a summer dance floor favourite.”

Listen to the song here:

It marks the second time Lo and Minogue have teamed up following 2019’s ‘Really Don’t Like U’, while it’s the first time Rexha and Minogue have worked together.

The new music comes ahead of Kylie’s BST Hyde Park show in London on July 13. The likes of Marina, Anitta, ALTÉGO, Ella Henderson, Tom Rasmusen, ADMT, Fred Roberts, Say Now, Grace Gachot and Blusher will be joining the ‘Padam Padam’ singer as special guests. Any remaining tickets for the show can be found here.

“I can’t wait to return to BST Hyde Park this summer,” Minogue said when the show was first announced in February. “My last appearance at this iconic event was in 2015 and it was a truly unforgettable experience. So excited to see you all again!”

Minogue previously hinted at a possible collaboration with Madonna after their recent appearance on stage together on one night of Madonna’s ‘Celebration’ tour. Joining forces for International Women’s Day, they sang a rendition of Minogue’s 2001 hit ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’, as well as Gloria Gaynor’s girl-power anthem ‘I Will Survive’.

Back in June, she joined forces with Orville Peck on stage, when the two broke out the live debut of a new track called ‘Midnight Ride’.

Delivery Announce Signing To Heavenly Recordings With A New Single ‘Digging The Hole’

Photo Cedit: Oscar O’Shea/ via Supplied

Building a name for themselves as one of the hardest-working bands throughout Australia, Delivery has finally achieved a record deal with Heavenly Recordings and released their first single after signing, ‘Digging The Hole’.

The band is in blistering energy throughout, letting you listen to every note being hit home and strongly driven; it moves beautifully through the intense middle section that builds up unto an overblown finale and introduces the listener to their favourite new band.

Delivery – ‘Digging The Hole’

The band shared the following background on the song: “Digging The Hole’ was the first track thrown in the mix for our upcoming album and it definitely set the tone of things to come. It was written in a rush, combining a bunch of unused ideas, with vocals and guitar leads completely ad-libbed on the spot as it was demoed.”

He added. “The final song ended up with more twists and turns than a Sherlock episode, but at the same time seemed to make perfect sense to me. Musically, it draws from a bunch of our typical influences: The Hives, The Intelligence, Parquet Courts, The Ramones as well as borrowing some tricks from our favorite Melbourne contemporaries. And lyrically… well, there are some people who take on the grunt work and there are some people who don’t mind shoveling the dirt back in and undoing all the effort. Digging The Hole is a reminder to be the person who keeps digging that hole, even when someone is filling it right back in again.”

Known to many as the most exciting band in Australia, Delivery released the much-anticipated first album, ‘Forever Giving Handshakes;, in 2023. It received great applause and spotted admirers in Henry Rollins, with Rolling Stone Australia listing its Top 10 albums of 2022. Cool and in a very DIY style, Delivery has gained a reputation for being one of those bands whose name everyone loves—audiences and other bands alike.

They’ve sold out headline shows from Melbourne to Berlin and proved themselves at the Golden Plains and Meadow Festivals. Hours of suggestions and 20-plus European dates have brought them to this show at Windmill Brixton.

Heavenly Recordings is now about to be the host of their second album, which will be released shortly.

You can stream their new single ‘Digging The Hole’ here.

Laura Marling shares new track, “Patterns”

Laura Marling has shared a track, “Patterns”, from her new album, Patterns In Repeat, which is released on October 25 through Chrysalis/Partisan Records.

THE NEW UNCUT COMES WITH A FREE, ULTRA-COLLECTABLE JOHN LENNON CD – ORDER A COPY HERE

You can hear “Patterns” below:

The record – her eighth solo album – was recorded almost entirely at Marling’s home studio and co-produced by Dom Monks, with additional assistance from Rob Moose.

“Over the course of nine months, I had happily prepared myself for the fact that my life as a songwriter would be put on hold while I adjusted to life as a new parent,” says Marling.

“How delighted then was I to discover that for the first few months of a baby’s life, you can bounce them in a bouncer and play guitar all day. For the first time in my life, I was able to gaze into another human’s eyes as I wrote. Of course, new parents feel like they discovered that feeling – one of the very finest that life has to offer, of looking into the eyes of your child and feeling the enormity of the picture as a whole, the enormity of a precarious life, celestial, fragile and extraordinary, taking its place among the comparatively banal constellation of a family. This banal constellation seems to have dominated the writing of Patterns in Repeat – the drama of the domestic sphere, the frail threads that bind a family together, the good intentions we hold onto for our progeny and the many and various ways they get lost in time. So much complexity in the banal, the caged, the everyday.

“Being as I am, 34 years old, now 15 years and 8 albums into a life in song, I am unable to escape the fact that each record has served as a time-stamped chapter of my life (though some have appeared more a premonition). Now, here we are, following a youth spent desperately trying to understand what it is to be a woman, I am at the brow of the hill, with an entirely new and enormous perspective surrounding me.”

The tracklisting is:

Child of Mine

Patterns

Your Girl

No One’s Gonna Love You Like I Can

The Shadows

Interlude

Caroline

Looking Back

Lullaby

Patterns in Repeat

Patterns In Repeat is available to pre-order here.

Meanwhile, Marling also takes up residencies in October and November:
