Hello, Dolly! and nine other sparkling revivals to see in the West End this summer

On Saturday, Hello, Dolly! opened at the London Palladium, starring veteran of the stage and screen Imelda Staunton as Dolly Levi. Michael Stewart and Jerry Herman’s classic story of a matchmaker tasked with finding love for a standoffish ‘half-a-millionaire’ is back in London for the first time in 40 years, marking its fourth run to date in the West End. Yet the idea of reaching back into the musical theatre canon to pull out a winner is far from unusual. Shows like Hello Dolly! never really disappear. In fact, summer 2024 is one of the busiest ever for revivals, with shows reappearing on our stages that first arrived as far back as 1951.

In celebration of the opening of Hello, Dolly! and all the musical theatre history we’re welcoming to our stages this summer season, here are nine other shows you won’t want to miss. Make sure to secure your Hello, Dolly! tickets here.

Sister Act

Until 31 August at the Dominion Theatre

Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sister Act the musical first opened in the West End in 2009. It wasn’t until 2022 that we welcomed it back, with Beverly Knight in the role of lounge singer turned nun in witness protection, Deloris Van Cartier. In the show’s current run at the Dominion Theatre, Knight reprised her role before handing over to Alexandra Burke, who plays Van Cartier until the production closes on August 31. Also in the cast is Gavin & Stacey’s Ruth Jones, making her West End debut as Mother Superior.

A Chorus Line

31 Jul – 25 Aug at Sadler’s Wells

A Chorus Line won an Olivier for Best New Musical when it first arrived in the West End in 1976. Centered around 17 professional dancers auditioning for spots in the chorus line of a Broadway show, the musical gained attention for its atypical structure and narration style, with each of the dancers and the choreographer getting to have their moment centre stage. This new production comes to Sadler’s Wells at the end of the month, transferring from Curve after an acclaimed run.

Cabaret

Booking until 31 May 2025 at the Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre

First arriving in the West End in 1968, Cabaret has remained one of the most performed and most celebrated musicals in Britain and beyond, returning to London time and time again. This particular revival has been playing at the purpose-built Kit Kat Club at the Playhouse Theatre since 2021, when it launched starring Eddie Redmayne as the Emcee and Jessie Buckley as Sally Bowles. Plenty of big names have taken on the roles since then – and the show currently stars Heartstopper’s Rhea Norwood and Bad Education’s Layton Williams.

Guys And Dolls

Booking until 4 Jan at the Bridge Theatre

Frank Loesser’s musical about the characters of the New York underworld first came to the West End in 1953, playing at the London Coliseum. The musical has had numerous London and West End revivals over the years, but none quite like its current iteration at the Bridge Theatre, which employs an immersive in-the-round staging that has to be experienced to be believed.

Kiss Me, Kate

Until 14 Sept at the Barbican Theatre

If you’re looking to really wind back the clock then this 1940s Cole Porter musical is the one for you. The story is somewhat meta: a theatre group stage a musical version of Shakespeare’s The Taming Of The Shrew, and drama ensues both on and off stage. Premiering on Broadway in 1948 and the West End in 1951, Kiss Me, Kate is decidedly vintage but far from outdated. Given director Bartlett Sher’s success with revivals of other classics like The King and I and My Fair Lady, this is going to be unmissable.

Starlight Express

Until 2 Feb at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre

For a taste of the 80s, you might want to catch Luke Sheppard’s new production of Starlight Express, the story of a young steam train hoping to win a race and impress a certain observation car. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s roller-skating classic first arrived in the West End in 1984, but certainly not in this much style – this version is housed in its own purposely designed Starlight Auditorium.

The Baker’s Wife

Until 14 Sept at the Menier Chocolate Factory

Many of the shows that roll back into the West End for repeated runs are instantly recognisable, but Stephen Schwartz and Joseph Stein’s 1989 musical is something of a hidden gem. The Baker’s Wife delighted audiences when it came to the West End at the end of the 80s, but despite strong reviews and a dedicated cult following, we’ve hardly seen it back on our stages since. This new production at the Menier Chocolate Factory offers a great re-introduction to the show, which follows the disruption to the inhabitants of a French village when the baker’s wife leaves him for another man.

The Rocky Horror Show

6 Sept – 20 Sept at the Dominion Theatre

The Rocky Horror Show first debuted in London in 1973 and ran for over seven years, with plenty of other productions and tours staged in the years since. This fan favourite is only back with us for a limited run, so if you want to experience all the thrills, frights and fabulousness of Frank-N-Furter (and see him played by none other than Jason Donovan) then you’ll need to act fast.

The Wizard Of Oz

12 Aug – 8 Sept at the Gillian Lynne Theatre

There have been multiple musical adaptations of both L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and the 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz, but Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams’ 2011 version combines the best elements of all. The Wiz comes back to the West End this summer with JLS’s Ashton Merrygold as the Tin Man and Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK winner The Vivienne as the Wicked Witch of the West.

Taylor Swift Drops Hushed Acoustic Version of Post Malone Collab ‘Fortnight’

The variations just keep on coming. On Monday (July 8), Taylor Swift dropped a new acoustic version of her The Tortured Poets Department song “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone. The hushed take on the single from Swift’s latest No. 1 album features the two singers trading vocals over a shimmery, unplugged arrangement.

The refresh is bundled with the original album version as well as bubbling remix by New York indie duo Cults. In an Instagram post on Tuesday morning (July 9) the band re-posted the striking cover image of the single featuring Swift modeling Posty’s signature face tats along with a message thanking the pop idol for roping them into her expansive universe.

“Honored to have been given the opportunity to remix legend @taylorswift song ‘Fortnight,’” they wrote.

The remix and unplugged take are the latest iterations of the double album that has been issued in a wide variety of physical variants, including multiple CD, vinyl, cassette and deluxe takes.

Swift recently added another accolade to her already bulging basked of records this week when TTPD hit its 11th consecutive and total week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (dated July 13), which ties the singer’s latest with both her 1989 and Fearless as her longest-leading No. 1 albums. TTPD is also the first album by a woman to spend 11 weeks in a row at No. 1 since the Whitney Houston-led soundtrack to The Bodyguard had a 13-straight week run together at No. 1 (of its 20 total nonconsecutive weeks at the top ) from December 1992 to March 1993.

Swift’s Eras Tour juggernaut marches on this week, with the first of two shows at the Stadion Letzigrund Zurich on Tuesday (July 9).

Public Service Broadcasting announce new album ‘The Last Flight’, share “pulsing” single ‘Electra’

Public Service Broadcasting have announced details of a new album titled ‘The Last Flight’. Pre-order the LP and check out the lead single ‘Electra’ below.

Announced today (July 9), the project marks the fifth studio album from the band, and is set for release on October 4 via their new label home, SO Recordings.

The inspiration for the LP is taken from the final voyage of America’s pioneering female “aviatrix” Amelia Earhart. Back in 1922, when she was aged just 25, she flew higher than any woman before her, and went on to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, setting multiple speed and distance records.

It also makes a nod to her final venture, when she announced in 1937 that she would circumnavigate the globe in her Lockheed Model 10-E Electra aircraft. She crossed the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia, but never made it back.

“I wanted to do a woman-focused story, because most of the archive we have access to is overwhelmingly male,” said J. Willgoose Esq, discussing the inspiration for their first album since 2021’s ‘Bright Magic’. “I was initially drawn in by Earhart’s final fight, rather than the successes that she had, but the more I read the more I became fascinated by her. Her bravery and her aeronautical achievements were extraordinary, but her philosophy and the dignity that she had… she was an outstanding person.”

To coincide with the announcement, the band have also shared the album’s first single ‘Electra’. It is a pulsating, funk-inspired track which, like the album, takes inspiration from the determination of Earheart and captures the same force as her aircraft.

“The song is about Amelia Earhart’s plane, the marvellously named Electra,” the band explained. “To match the name, the vibrancy and the excitement of the aircraft, the track is full of pulsing electronics and interlocking, percussive melody lines, plus pace.” Check it out below.

Like the song, the full album is set to capture the same full-of-life force that Earheart had, as well as evoke feelings of adventure, speed and freedom in both a physical and psychological way.

It also stars guests including Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket, Andreya Casablanca and EERA – who both appeared on ‘Bright Magic’ – and This Is The Kit’s Kate Stables.

“The final flight is the spine of the journey: the story jumps off at different points, and examines different facets of her personality, her relationship with her husband, her attitude to flying, her attitude to existing. She gave herself, I think, less than a 50 per cent chance of survival when she flew the Atlantic alone. To put yourself, willingly, in those situations… I think it says something about that drive at the heart of humanity,” the band explained of the album.

“However ‘The Last Flight’ isn’t doom-laden or covered in grief. There’s adventure, freedom, the joy of being alive. The reason why she wanted to fly was to find the beauty in living – ‘to know the reason why I’m alive, and to feel that every minute.’ The flight did fail, but she was right. Of all the people we’ve written about, I have the deepest respect and admiration for her.”

Mamby On The Beach 2016 Review

For two years in a row, Mamby on the Beach has taken over Oakwood Beach in Chicago during the 4th of July weekend. It is not an easy festival to explain, and it is completely different than your typical ‘EDM’ festival. There are no kids running around trading kandi bracelets, and we also haven’t seen any neon t-shirts with prints such as ‘RAGE’ or ‘PARTY WITH SLUTS’. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it is one of the reasons why we love the vibe at Mamby so much.

There is something about the beach which makes the Mamby experience completely different than any other festival. We have attended many major festivals in the United States, but nothing can quite compare to Mamby. The lineup isn’t as beefy as other fests, there aren’t nearly as many stages, and it’s nowhere near as crowded as EDC or Ultra – but that is just what makes Mamby our favorite Chicago festival. There are carefully crafted decorations, delicious food from various vendors, nutritional workshops, volleyball courts, and more! The environment curated by React Presents proves to be just what people are looking for during the 4th of July weekend, and the best thing is that no matter what kind of music you’re into, they have something for you.

Diversity is a word often associated with Chicago, and looking at Mamby on the Beach, and the lineup provided, it reflects that perfectly. The best explanation of Mamby which we come up with would be a ‘laid back beach party’ – with very good vibes. The party goes on until 10p.m., but for those that want to go extra hard, there is a plethora of after parties scattered all around Chicago.

On the first day of Mamby, we jumped from stage to stage. Seeing Thomas Jack, Shiba San, Tycho, Atmosphere, Milky Chance, and Tale of Us. It was our first time seeing Thomas Jack, and we really enjoyed the time slot and stage selected – it matched up perfectly to his feel good music. Tycho was one of our favorite acts, playing a mix of ambient music combined with synths, melodies, and vocals. Shiba San had the MixMag DJ Tent bumpin, with his signature bass house sounds, but Atmosphere on the Beach Stage has to be our favorite Saturday performer, and one of our favorite highlights of the festival.

On Sunday, Chicago native, Lupe Fiasco, played on the Park Stage, had the crowd very involved in his performance, and even brought out Matthew Santos during his set to sing “Superstar.” The artist also took time out to speak to his fans about making efforts to decrease Chicago’s murder rate. We left Lupe a bit early to get to the Beach Stage, where everyone was rocking out to Chromeo’s funky disco sounds with an amazing backdrop of the Chicago skyline. We finished off the Sunday with some badass techno beats provided by Loco Dice at the MixMag DJ Tent.

Overall, we had a great time at Mamby on the Beach, and we cannot wait to see what React Presents has in store for Oakwood Beach in 2017.
