Umphrey’s McGee co-founders Brendan Bayliss and Joel Cummins have confirmed a pair of acoustic Midwest gigs. This fall, the guitarist and keyboardist will come together for shows at Whitestown, IN’s Moontown Brewing Company on November 5 and Peoria, IL’s Kenny’s Westside Pub on November 6, with a portion of proceeds from both gigs going to the Cummins Educational Scholarships.

Up next, Bayliss will perform with Jennifer Hartswick as Hartliss at Manteno, IL’s Shoe Fest this Friday, September 4. Umphrey’s McGee will then kick off a three-night run at Bellvue, CO’s The Mishawaka on September 25. It is unknown if Bayliss will host his annual stripped-down holiday show, or what form the performance might take, following guitarist Jake Cinninger’s departure from the band earlier this summer.

Medeski, Martin & Wood drummer Billy Martin has offered an update after he was involved in a care accident in July. Martin broke his right band, forcing him to cancel some summer appearances.

In a note Martin shares, “Hey Folks, mid-July, I was in a serious car accident and broke my right hand. It’s been a real blow since drumming is my main livelihood, and right now I can’t take gigs until October I’m told.  Fortunately, no-one else was involved. Just me and a giant tree – who survived with barely a scrape. The car was totaled. I am so fortunate to have survived. As most of you know I have many other creative outlets. But using my hands has been of utmost importance. So, I’ve been taking it slow. Smelling the roses, reflecting, envisioning new pathways. In the meantime, I’ve got my improvisers class at The New School this upcoming semester and private students at my home studio The Herman House Gallery or online. I’m also preparing to release a new series of illuminated sculptures, and I hope to sell some of that work to help support myself through this recovery period before I can return to drumming.  If you are interested in acquiring a lamp or want exclusive preview of my next series (Catalog de Lumiere II) to launch mid-September let me know here.“

Martin to slated to perform at New York’s The Stone, which is located at the New School, on October 16. The gig, dubbed, NOLA x NY, will also feature Byron Asher (woodwinds, electronics), Jeff Albert (trombone), Kathryn Schulmeister (bass) and event curator Alexandria Smith (trumpet, electronics). MMW played their first proper shows in several years a few months ago aboard Jam Cruise and in South Korea.

Spafford brought August to a close with a series of East Coast dates. On Thursday, August 27, the group rolled into New Haven, CT’s Toad’s Place and welcomed Lotus guitarist Tim Palmieri to the stage. Palmieri, a longtime area resident who pops up regularly in Connecticut when not on tour, emerged at the end of Spafford’s first set for the Pink Floyd classic “Run Like Hell.” The tune was one of several cover selections Spafford offered during the night, including Stone Temple Pilots’ “Plush” and Violent Femmes’ “Kiss Off.”

Spafford will kick off a run of September shows at South Salt Lake, UT’s The Commonwealth Room on September 15 while Lotus will host their annual Summerdance festival in Garrettsville, OH from September 4-6. Flying Mojito Bros, The Floozies and Saxsquatch, among others, will round out the bill.
