On Saturday in Nashville, Big Thief’s performance at the Ryman Auditorium took a surprising and satisfying turn. Early on, Adrianne Lenker informed the audience in a welcoming manner, “If you had some hopes of hearing some songs you might know those can be discarded.” She then added, “If you’re all open to it, it could be a really unique night of music.” The trio, which also consists of Buck Meek and James Krivchenia (along with touring bassist Joshua Crumbly) then delivered the 29 songs from the group’s forthcoming album Horsepower.

Lenker noted that Horsepower was recorded in Nashville last May. She also explained to the audience that the performance would not follow the sequencing of the record, although it did feature a number of the musicians who joined Big Thief in the studio. This included an expanded version of their core band with pedal steel players Greg Leisz and Russ Pahl, along with violinists Richard Bowden, Hannah Read and Zosha Warpeha.

On August 9, lovers of the blues and six-string mastery were treated to a guitar summit from Gov’t Mule and Joe Bonamassa at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre.

With the sun slowly setting during Mule’s 12-song set, the quartet mixed covers with its own catalog of material including opener “World Boss.” The band also visited its past with “Mother Earth” and “Mule” from 1995’s self-titled debut and “Shake Our Way Out,” off of its last studio release, Peace…Like a River. Midway through the performance Mule also debuted an appropriate cover for the evening—Bruce Springsteen’s “Youngstown”—which had a slight country shuffle to it rather than the original’s angry, mournful tone.

On September 18 Neil Young will release a new album with the Chrome Hearts. Second Song is the sophomore release from the group, which also includes Micah Nelson (guitar), Spooner Oldham (keys), drummer Anthony LoGergo (drums), and bassist Cory McCormick (bass).

Earlier this month Young shared the 11-minute title track. He has now posted another tune from Second Song. “Casting Me Away From You” is a three-minute tune that appears on the Neil Young Archives. Young accompanied it with a backstory, which explains that it “is one of my early songs. I think I wrote it in 64 or 65. When we recorded ‘Second Song’ early this year I ran out of tunes fast. I only had the 5 new ones, long ones. and I needed more, so I started to feel it out and came up with Casting Me Away—from the deep past. There is an old recording with my school-mate Comrie Smith, somewhere in the Archives from that time. I recorded it for the ‘Second Song’ album with the Chrome Hearts the next day.”

Young and the Chrome Hearts will perform three dates in late September, in Bridgeport CT (9/22), Philadelphia, PA (9/24) and then Virginia Beach, VA at Farm Aid (9/26).

Given all that’s happening in the world these days, we here at Relix are always thrilled to offer news of nuptial bliss. To this end, we’re pleased to report that Molly Tuttle and Ketch Secor were married over the weekend.

As reported by People and shared via the Old Crow Medicine Show socials, the event took place at a private park in Santa Cruz on Saturday. People notes that Tuttle and Secor’s first dance was to Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon,” sung by AJ Lee, accompanied by Tuttle’s brother and father, along with some members of Old Crow.

The wedding reception featured a square dance led by Tuttle’s mother, along with music from The Hot Club of San Francisco. Tuttle and Secor also appeared with the group for a few tunes.

The San Francisco Giants will be home through the weekend, with series against the Reds, then the Diamondbacks. Music fans who attend this week’s games at Oracle Park will have an opportunity to see some of Mickey Hart’s artwork. He currently has an installation underway, which will extend through the team’s current homestand.

Hart’s pieces include “Home Plate” which is pictured above, as well as “Djembe Tuning Rope.” He says of the latter:
