This Is Where My Live Set Actually Begins A live set doesn’t start when I walk onstage. It starts much earlier, in the studio, when I decide what the performance actually needs and which machine is going to take responsibility for which part of the music. I don’t really see my live setup as a collection of synthesizers, drum machines, and sequencers. I see it more like a small electronic orchestra. One machine becomes the drummer. Another takes care of the bass. Something else creates movement, texture, or tension. And my job is not to control every single note; it’s to conduct the whole thing, decide who speaks, who stays quiet, when the energy changes, and where the set goes next. That also means not every piece of gear gets to come onstage. Something can sound incredible in the studio and still be completely wrong for a live set if it needs too much attention, overlaps with another machine, or gives me more choices than I can realistically handle while performing. In this video, I’m showing how I think about building a live setup before it ever reaches the stage, how I assign roles, how I decide what needs to be reliable and what needs to remain flexible, and why I deliberately leave space for things to happen in the moment. Because I’m not trying to take my studio onstage. I’m trying to build a band I can conduct.
