Dogs in a Pile have confirmed a trio of fall multi-night runs. The rising New Jersey jamband will hit the Philadelphia market first, appearing as part of King of Prussia, PA’s Concerts Under the Stars series on October 9 and 10. The first night of the run will be an “evening wit” show while The Reality Check Experiment and Fungkshui will supply support duties on night two.

Then, from October 20-21, Dogs in the Pile will hold court at Baltimore’s 8 x 10 as part of the club’s reopening suite of events. It will also mark the quintet’s return to the Mid-Atlantic venue for the first time in almost two years.

And, looking ahead a bit, Dogs will make their debut at New York’s Irving Plaza on December 4 and 5. The Band Memo will warm up the crowd on night one and Thesaurus Rex ™︎ will round out the bill on night two.

Ronnie Wood made a surprise appearance with the Hollywood Vampires at London’s The O2 Arena last night. The Rolling Stones guitarist emerged during the supergroup’s encore for his band’s 1971 Sticky Fingers classic “Brown Sugar,” as well as the blues standard “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” which was popularized in rock circles by The Yardbirds and later Aerosmith.

The Hollywood Vampires—an all-star project consisting of Alice Cooper, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, longtime Cooper guitar/bass associate Tommy Henriksen and guitarist/actor Johnny Depp—had not performed since July 30, 2023, before yesterday. They opened their show with “I Want My Now,” a 2019 single, and proceeded to chuck in material from their individual repertoires like Cooper’s “School’s Out” and “I’m Eighteen” and Aerosmith’s “Livin’ on the Edge” and “Walk This Way,” among others favorites. They also spliced in a cross-generational mix of covers, such as The Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Die,” The Who’s “Baba O’ Riley,” AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” The Doors’ “Roadhouse Blues” and the Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs.” After Wood’s appearance, the night came to a close with a take on Jeff Beck’s “Hi Ho Silver Lining.”

Hollywood Vampires will perform next at Cardiff, Wales’ Cardiff Castle tomorrow. Though The Rolling Stones have opted not to tour in support of their new album Foreign Tongues, Wood did recently run through a few tracks with Mick Jagger and Stones touring member Matt Clifford at a UK press event.

In 1969 Istanbul, James Baldwin brought Don Cherry and Turkish percussionist Okay Temiz together to score Fortune and Men’s Eyes, a controversial play about gay love in an Istanbul prison. The resulting music—a hypnotic, unruly weave of drums and flutes, somewhere between free jazz and a fever dream—vanished for more than 50 years. Now, Caz Plak has finally unearthed it.

Some records evoke another era, and then there are those that seem untouched by chronology. Originally released in 1999, The Glinting Spade is one of the latter: an ethereal procession of drone, medieval folk, ritual percussion, and acoustic reverie that emerged just before the so-called freak folk renaissance.
