Oteil Burbridge and Lamar Williams Jr. : The Offering

It was inevitable that Oteil Burbridge and Lamar Williams Jr. would find kinship together. The Allman Brothers Band’s low-end runs through both musicians: Williams is the son of ’70s ABB bassist Lamar Williams; Burbridge assumed that role in the late ’90s. With The Offering, Burbridge and Williams tap into that familial energy for a collaborative album of originals that nod to those roots but sprout up new branches in surprising ways. Most notably, Burbridge plays banjo throughout The Offering and most of these songs started on banjo nearly a decade ago with Williams adding lyrics to Burbridge’s rhythmic melodies.

In the time since those early writing sessions, Burbridge joined the Grateful Dead universe, and Williams sang with the New Mastersounds and the North Mississippi Allstars. When their schedules freed up, the duo flew to Iceland to track eight songs with producer Alan Evans (Soulive) and members of Burbridge’s rotating Oteil and Friends project—Melvin Seals, John Morgan Kimock, Weedie Braimah, Jason Crosby, and Tom Guarna.

Banjo is the driving force for many of these songs, but you wouldn’t call it bluegrass. Much like BĂ©la Fleck, Burbridge takes a jazzy, driving, groove-based approach to the instrument with Williams adding his soulful vocals, a dynamic evident on the uplifting “The Way We Rise” and the socially minded “Love & War.” As a whole, The Offering mixes elements of soul (“Hush”), jazz, blues (“First Born”), West African rhythms, and jamband-style improv. “If Their Lips Moving” includes a heady jam section that sounds like “Eleanor Rigby” meets “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” because no matter how far they get from it, you can’t fully keep the Allman DNA out of the music Burbridge and Williams make together.

Gov’t Mule Welcome JJ Grey & Mofro for Van Morrison Tribute

Last night, Gov’t Mule’s extended summer tour pulled into Lewiston, NY’s Artpark. JJ Grey & Mofro supplied support duties and, at the end of Gov’t Mule’s show, members of the Florida-based group returned to the stage for a collaborative moment.

After Mule ran through the original “Shake Our Way Out,” from the 2023 LP Peace…Like A River, Grey emerged to sing and play harmonica with the quartet on Van Morrison’s famed “Tupelo Honey.” Several of Grey’s bandmates circled back to the stage with the Mofro leader as well, including bassist Todd Smallie—a veteran of Derek Tucks Band—trumpeter Dennis Marion, saxophonist Darren Escar, keyboardist Eric Brigmond and background vocalists Katie Dutton and Linzy Lauren. Gov’t Mule then closed their set sans guests with “Mr. Man,” before returning to the stage for the lone encore of “Bring On The Music.”

Gov’t Mule will perform at Atlantic City, NJ’s The Showroom at the Tropicana this evening while Grey and Mofro will appear at Seaside Heights, NJ’s Seaside Heights Beach.

Grace Bowers Shifts Direction on New EP

Grace Bowers will begin a new era with the release of her forthcoming EP, simply titled Grace, on November 5.  The set will not only showcase the 20-year-old guitar virtuoso’s instrumental abilities bur also her skills as a vocalist and songwriter. Along with the EP announcement, Bowers has also shared the set’s lead single, “Eat Shit and Live.”

“It’s a sarcastic, angry song about me being fed up with stupid people, pretty much,” Bowers said in a statement.

The title had been sitting in Bowers’ Notes app for months, waiting for the right moment. During a songwriting session, she rediscovered the phrase while searching through old ideas for lyrics to match a guitar riff she’d unearthed from a voice memo. “I scrolled through all the random shit I have in there, and that one just stuck out to me,” she explained. “The song came together in an hour or two. It just flowed.”

Oliver Wood Confirms September to Solo Shows, New Improv Band

Oliver Wood has confirmed a series of Northeast solo shows. The short run will kick off in Naples, NY on September 25, before touching down in Saratoga Springs, NY on September 26, Arundel, ME on September 28, Exeter, NH on September 29 and Northampton, MA on September 30. The Wood Brothers frontman will be joined by Ric Robertson as direct support at all five shows. In Exeter, Wood will offer two shows in a single day at the intimate The Word Barn.

Just prior to those headlining gigs, Wood will also appear at Nashville, TN’s Harken Hall on September 12, sharing a bill with Lola Kirke and Carlene Carter as part of the Grassroots & Nudie Suits Festival.

At his upcoming gigs, Wood is expected to focus on material from his two solo albums, 2021’s Always Smilin’ and 2024’s Fat Cat Silhouette, as well as offer choice renditions of “songs that frequently showcase his love for mid-20th-century country blues.” In a solo setting, Wood also regularly pulls out material from his pre-Wood Brothers band, the Atlanta-based King Johnson, who were cult favorites on the Southern music circuit in the late ’90s and early 2000s.
