On November 6 via the Neal Casal Music Foundation will issue a archival collection from the acclaimed artist. Book Of Stories (Home Recordings 1998-2003) draws from the recordings Casal left behind after he took his own life in 2019.

The music originated with an Otari 8-track analog tape recorder that Jim Scott gave to Neal Casal in 1997, along with accompanying mics. Scott produced Casal’s 1995 album Fade Away Diamond Time along with 1999’s Anytime Tomorrow. The 12 tracks on Book Of Stories were created using the gear supplied by Scott, as Casal delved into home recording sessions.

Today we are premiering the video for “Muscatine” from the forthcoming release. Gary Waldman, Casal’s longtime friend and manager who co-produced Book Of Stories, reflects, “‘Muscatine’ is a song that Neal wrote in 1998. The title comes from the city of Muscatine, Iowa, which Neal traveled through on tour. He loved how the name of the town sounded. It was so singable that he turned it into the focal point for this beautiful song. This was during an extremely prolific songwriting era for Neal. At the same time he was honing his home recording skills and playing all the instruments himself on these recordings. ‘Muscatine’ is one of the best examples of his unreleased tunes. For the album, “Book of Stories,” which this song is part of, we’ve uncovered a great batch of his unreleased recordings, which provide a unique look at this creative period in Neal’s life. The video was assembled from footage shot by director Ray Foley during that same time and adds something poignant to our memories of Neal.”

On Friday November 20, a new project will take the stage at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Jayski and the Dawn featuring Jay Lane and Dave Ellis will interpret the music of the good ol’ Grateful Dead as well as the Bob Weir catalog with a funk flair.

Lane has a longtime association with this music. The drummer first joined Bob Weir and Rob Wasserman in 1994 in their trio project which morphed into RatDog. He later was a member of Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros. Lane also appeared with Dead & Company during the group’s final few years.

Ellis began his association with Weir between 1996-99 in the RatDog lineup. He also was part of the first post-Grateful project to feature Weir, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart, contributing sax to The Other Ones, a group that also included Bruce Hornsby, Mark Karan, Steve Kimock and John Molo.

Lane and Ellis have been friends since they both attended Cazadero Music Camp together as teenagers. Jayski and the Dawn will also feature additional Bay Area musicians.

Tickets for the Great American Music Hall gig are now onsale.

On Sept. 12-13, Evanston Folk Festival returned to Dawes Park, just outside Chicago. The third annual gathering, featuring artists and purveyors of the folk music tradition, brought more than 30 performers across three stages over two days. In total, over 12,000 spectators attended the multi-day series that spotlights songs, stories, and select acts.

Saturday’s schedule brought out various artists, beginning with afternoon sets performed by pickers The Fretliners, Seattle-based trio The Brudi Brothers, guitarist Modu Moctar, in addition to the Windy City’s own Henhouse Prowlers featuring Don Stiernberg, and the effervescent sounds of Valerie June.
