Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, has unveiled the unsettling music video for ‘Lithonia’ – you can watch it below.
Last night (July 22) – after sharing private links of the video with fans via text messages over the weekend – the actor and rapper finally made the video available to the public. The music video, directed by Jack Begert, clocks in at two minutes – around a minute under the song’s official runtime.
Besides Glover, the music video stars musician and actor Alex Wolff (Hereditary, Pig), Suzanna Son (The Idol, Fear Street: Prom Queen), Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson, musician Lynette Williams and Passion Pit and The Flaming Lips’ Ray Suen.
The video starts with Glover and his band performing intimate group, before it quickly grows more unsettling and takes a dark turn. Watch the music video for ‘Lithonia’ below.
‘Lithonia’ marked the first single from Glover’s final album under the Childish Gambino moniker, ‘Bando Stone and The New World’. The album – released last weekend – also serves as the official soundtrack for a new movie of the same name. Donald Glover revealed the trailer for the film recently, though the film has yet to receive a release date.
Kyann-Syan Williams wrote of ‘Bando Stone and The New World’ in a four-star review for NME: “Glover has made a record as otherworldly as his other outings. Yet, ‘Bando Stone and The New World’ stumbles slightly – where its sonic variety is exciting, it lacks a clear sense of cohesion or theme compared to his previous work – making it a bittersweet farewell to the legend of Childish Gambino.”
Last week, ahead of the album’s release, Glover explained why he was retiring Childish Gambino, chalking it up to portraying the rapper not being “fulfilling” anymore, and wanted to dedicate more time to his personal life and other avenues after the death of his father and the birth of his children.
