Every Tuesday, new additional shows are added to the Play Dead app. Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux selects two releases from the vault to add to the library of material, which has been mastered from the original tapes in Hi-Res. Originally, 20 new archival recordings shows were seeded to the app, along with the Dave’s Picks series of releases previously only available on CD.
Last week’s Dead Drop featured two shows from the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center on February 18 and 19, 1985. This week concludes the third night of the run with the band’s performance on 2/20/85. The description on the Play Dead Facebook site notes: “February 20 closes the opening Kaiser run with Cold Rain > Day Tripper, only the second Day Tripper, followed by a silky West L.A. and Mama Tried > Big River. The second set delivers Scarlet > Fire > Playin > Drums > Space, before The Wheel > Black Peter > Lovelight. U.S. Blues closes the Kaiser run.”
The second show uploaded today is band’s next performance which took place at the Berkeley Community Theater on 3/9/85. Merl Saunders guests during a second set segue from “Space” into “The Other One.” The accompanying post observes, “Bertha > One More Saturday Night > Sugaree sets the little room ablaze before Row Jimmy and Let It Grow. The second set is transition city: China Cat > Cumberland > Miracle > Eyes, Eyes > GDTRFB, After Drums > Space, the band including special guest Merl Sanders circles The Other One before Phil starts dropping the bombs. The Wheel starts turning and there’s no slowing down. Sugar Magnolia is next before Jerry closes with Baby Blue.”
